Hello everyone, I’m so glad to be back at Dragonsteel Nexus (DSNX) this year. I was so excited to attend again, so this year I decided to in cosplay. And it had to be of favorite character, Kaladin from Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive books. So join me as I cosplay my way through Dragonsteel Nexus 2024!
Gettting into Cosplay
After a smooth flight I arrived safe and sound at Salt Lake City (where Dragonsteel is held). I met up with our co-blogger Justin who’s also covering DSNX with me. I did a quick costume change at our hotel, and we also did a little dress rehearsal:
I’d like to say I’m more of a “practical” cosplayer. The jacket and vest were borrowed (thank you again Carlos!). The inner shirt, pants, and shoes were quick buys from Amazon. What I am especially proud about is the self made Syl Spear. I’m really happy how the cosplay came together! I also talked a little about my cosplay build in my previous post here. So after getting all the cosplay together it was time to head over to the con!
DSNX Con Encounters in Kaladin Cosplay!
Upon arriving at DSNX I immediately I noticed so many amazing cosplayers. I tentatively approached one of them, and asked if I could get a photo. I was so grateful they said yes! I was immediately drawn to their Vin cosplay (from Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn series).
Within a couple minutes from that encounter, I had a few other fun cosplay encounters as well:
Everyone I encountered complemented my cosplay. Most especially, my self made Syl Spear. I was super grateful for that. I worked hard 3D printing and building my spear from scratch. I even designed some of the parts myself! It was so great to hear all the positive encouragement . One of my favorite tricks was showing everything that, probably like the Syl Spear from the books, my spear could extend and self stand:
That drew a lot of attention from con goers and compliments. It made me so happy to see everthing come together, especially after all the work I put into making sure it worked right. And it worked, and looked, great!
The Radiant Cosplay Meet Up
Soon after having some lunch I was approached by a staff member from the convention. He asked me if I wanted to join the Radiant Cosplay meetup (me!?). I said of course! My jaw dropped when I saw all the phenomenal and just darn amazing cosplay that was on display at the meet up. Check our epic group photo below:
And there I am front and center with my self made self standing Syl Spear. Just so awesome. Go Bridge 4!

And there you have it, such an awesome way to experience an amazing con. I am so happy with my decision to cosplay as Kaladin at Dragonsteel Nexus 2024. If you like cosplaying your way through cons, I highly recommend it!! Journey Before Destination!
