Helloooooo, Skkawliens, and welcome to our coverage of Dragonsteel Nexus 2024!
I had the privilege of getting into the first lightning signing of the convention, and it was definitely a highlight. Meeting Brandon Sanderson was like stepping into a highstorm — fast, intense, and energizing. I barely had time to ask, “Will we find out who Shallan’s mom is in Wind and Truth?” before he hit me with a classic RAFO (Read and Find Out) and handed me a special RAFO card. It was a perfect Sanderson moment: full of mystery, excitement, and just enough to keep me theorizing while I wait to read Wind and Truth.
Let’s rewind about 30 minutes so I can explain how we have this fine photographic evidence of my fortuitous meeting with the Sanderman himself.
Well, it all started when I got into a long, snaking line and settled down next to Melody, who was cosplaying as Tress from Tress of the Emerald Sea. Skkaw, Melody, and I got to talking and decided we needed photo evidence of this special moment. I started by taking photos of Melody and Skkaw, and later, Melody and I agreed to do a photo trade while we were getting our books signed.
Since this was a lightning signing, it was supposed to be fast, and it truly was the quickest and most orderly signing I’ve ever experienced. We were lined up in a large hall, and then Brandon came down the line, signing books for each person.
It went by in a flash, but in those 30 minutes, I managed to have a great chat with Melody about how she shared Tress with her book club, crack a few Doug jokes, and talk to another new line friend about some seriously cool custom artwork done on the edges of the pages in their Words of Radiance copy.
What a rush to meet Brandon and be told the infamous RAFO! There are many theories out there about Shallan’s mom, like that her mother was a Herald or that she herself is one! I recommend checking out the Cosmere Conversations episode 101: “Who is Shallan’s Mother?” for some great theorizing from Brooke Silva and Tyler Shotwell.
I can say one thing for sure: I will be reading to find out! I hope you’ll stick with Skkaw and me and check out our other con stories from this year’s Dragonsteel.
